Topic outline

  • Welcome to the Scope 2 Recorded Webinar

The Scope 2 Guidance Recorded Webinar is a 4-hour online course on accounting for corporate emissions from purchased energy.

The Scope 2 Guidance standardizes how corporations measure and report emissions from purchased or acquired electricity, steam, heat, and cooling, including new requirements on accounting for emissions from energy contracts and instruments (such as renewable energy certificates) in greenhouse gas inventories. This publication is a compliment to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, the most widely-used standard for corporate greenhouse gas accounting.

The training covers the reporting requirements and provides practical examples on how to calculate emissions based on different contractual instruments in different countries. The content is available for free to all learners who have an account. To earn a certificate of completion, learners must enroll in the course from the GHG Protocol Learning Store. The registration cost associated covers the cost hosting learner accounts in the course and updates to our Learning Management System (LMS).

    • Common questions about the Scope 2 Guidance

  • The need for Scope 2 Guidance

In this first module we will cover the background of the Scope 2 Guidance and the need that inspired its development. We will also discuss how it interacts with the published Standards and Guidance and how it interacts with disclosure programs.

  • Setting a boundary: How do I determine my Scope 2 emissions?

How do I set my Scope 2 boundary and determine which emissions to include in which scope?

  • Background: What are energy attribute certificates?

In this module we discuss Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), which include Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Guarantees of Origin (GOs) and other energy attribute certificates.

  • Methods: What are the two Scope 2 accounting methods?

In this module we will compare the two accounting methods for Scope 2 emissions: market-based and location-based.

  • Calculation: How do I calculate emissions based on both methods?

In this module we will discuss how to calculate emissions in both the location-based and market-based methods.

  • Requirements: Amendments to the Scope 2 reporting requirements from the Corporate Standard
